Banks Rowing Club COVID - 19 Update

As a result of the easing of lockdown restrictions by the Victorian Government, Rowing Victoria has issued an announcement regarding the resumption of training. We are now able to have very limited resumption of training as follows.

Ralph Howard’s 102nd Birthday

Ralph Howard, our oldest member, turns 102 on 22 April 2020. We celebrate his both his birthday and his life in this very special report.

Corona Virus Update: Closure of Club

The Government’s Announcements of last night were that gyms and indoor sporting facilities (and certain other venues) will be restricted from opening from midday local time 23 March 2020 (today).

2020 Banks State Representatives

After our success at the Rowing Victoria State Championships, we are pleased to see a strong representation of Banks members representing Victoria at the National Championships. This is the strongest contingent in terms of numbers from Banks Rowing Club at this level for many years.

Victorian State Championships Wrap Up

On the weekend of 29 February / 1 March the Victorian State Championships were held on Lake Wendouree, Ballarat. The Club was represented by a large number of fit and dedicated athletes and coaches who represented the Club with great pride and distinction. The Club achieved outstanding results, with crews winning: 12 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medal, 3 Bronze Medals.

John Jopling - Memorial Service

Following on from our earlier notice, we can now confirm, a memorial service for John Jopling will be held at : Leonda by the Yarra, 2 Wallen Rd. Hawthorn, Victoria, 3122. Date: Thursday October 10th, 3pm.

It is with sadness we announce the death of a long standing member of the Banks Rowing Club. John has been involved and all levels of the club since joining in 1970. He was a committee member, fundraiser, rower and generally a highly regarded and respected member of the club. He will be sorely missed. Further details to follow.

Rosie Popa and Women's Eight Qualify for the 2020 Olympics

With Banks' Rosie Popa sitting in the 5 seat, the Australian Women's Eight executed a fearless race in their A Final at this year's World Championships. Their effort not only won them a silver medal, but also secured them a spot at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020; the first time in a long time an Australian Women's Eight has qualified for the Olympics directly from the World Championships.

2019 National Championships Recap

Congratulations to all our Banks members who traveled to Sydney for this year’s National Championships. The number of entries was considerable and has shown our resurgence of competing athletes has continued from last year. In addition, we have seen an increase in the numbers reaching the finals as well the very pleasing result of having members selected for State representation as well as National Representation.

New Head Coach at Banks

Will joins us from Sydney University Boat Club (SUBC) where he has been a member since 2007, Coaching and Managing Men’s Development Crews and SUBC’s International Tours for a number of years. He has been a Vice President of SUBC since 2016. Will has also represented SUBC, NSW and Australia as an elite athlete, and coxed the winning NSW King’s Cup crews in 2017 and 2018.
