The Alan Jacobsen Club

The “AJC” was formed in 2006 with the sole intention of enabling supporters of the Banks Rowing Club to make financial tax free donations to the club by channelling their donations via the Australian Sports Foundation. It is the intention of the AJC to maintain an ongoing focus for fund raising through a variety of fund raising initiatives into the future.

The provision of funds to date through AJC donations has enabled us to purchase new boats for the first time in many years. This in turn has been a significant factor in the success of our under age crews in recent State and National level championships.

Banks is now one of three clubs participating in the Rowing Victoria National Elite Development Programme (NEDP). This is a major step in re-establishing the Banks RC as one of Australia’s elite rowing bodies, but this recognition is only the start. To further encourage athletes to join the club, we need to be in a position to provide competitive equipment in the range of classes.

There is an application form for making a tax free donation via the ASF programme. It can be downloaded as indicated.

If you have not already committed to this scheme, please give serious thought to assisting the revival of our great club and ensuring that our club which was founded in 1866 survives and thrives for many years to come.

If you are making an annual donation, please use the form to facilitate your renewal.

We are grateful for any donation but donations of $1.000 or greater will receive an AJC polo shirt and have their generosity recognised on the AJC honour board in the club house.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alan Jacobsen joined the Banks Rowing club in 1937. In his first year at the club, he was the stroke of the Victorian King’s Cup crew on the Yarra in 1938. Alan played VFL football at Footscray for two years. His athletic endeavours were interrupted by WW2 in which he served with distinction. Alan became a very successful business man where he demonstrated the same lateral thinking and innovation that would become a hallmark of his coaching career.

Alan’s most noted contribution to the club was as the coach of the senior squad that took all before it in the 1960’s. Under Alan’s direction, the club won the 1961 Vic Champion Senior 8 for the first time since 1920. He was the winning coach of the 1962, ‘63 and ‘64 King’s Cups, the gold medal winning 8 at the 1962 Empire Games and the coach of the Australian 8 at the Tokyo Olympics. Successive generations of athletes in all classes had the honour of being coached by Alan for many years after that. Alan was made a life member of the Banks Rowing Club in 1987. He died on the 10 October 1995.
